New Community Website

Ordinarily, you'd be at the right spot, but we've recently launched a brand new community website... For the community, by the community.

Yay... Take Me to the Community!

The Community Blog is a personal opinion of community members and by no means the official standpoint of DNN Corp or DNN Platform. This is a place to express personal thoughts about DNNPlatform, the community and its ecosystem. Do you have useful information that you would like to share with the DNN Community in a featured article or blog? If so, please contact .

DNN Hangout Special Episode - October 2015 - Building Modules Using the DNN 8 MVC Pattern

DNN 8 MVC Module Development Pattern

This is the second of two special episodes of the DNN Hangout, focused on helping DNN developers world-wide to learn more about the DNN 8 module development patterns.  This time, we walked through the MVC development pattern in DNN.  Following this hangout, you should have all of the knowledge you need to get started building your module for the DNN 8 Module Development Contest

The dnn8 ctp6 source package doesn't display the DCC manager after selecting it in the admin section. Some other options like File Management don't work either.

Hello Tony:

Thanks for letting us know about that. It's probably best to report those in the beta testing forum. It should get the right amount of attention there. :)

Will.. I did on 10/10 and asked if anyone can verify this. No replies.

@Tony: Yeah, well I can't speak to that, but you've done the right thing so far as I can tell. :)

@Joe: Any help for Tony?

Joe.. please include the source code of the modules you're basing your tutorials on. I tried to create a super simple test module following the steps here and I keep getting this error: "Attempt by method 'xxxxx.Index()' to access method 'System.Web.Mvc.Controller.View()' failed." Index() is my controller's method. Do we need to have an entry in businessControllerClass in the manifest? It would be a time saver if we can base our test modules on something the works so we know exactly what's causing the errors we get. Otherwise I will just blame a ctp product that has bugs.

@Tony: There are module templates that have been submitted as pull requests to the Christoc Module Template project. We're just waiting for Hammond to create a release now. You should see examples there.

@Will.. I don't see any MVC ones. Just SPA.

Also I don't know about waiting for someone to create a template for DNN. Joe mentioned in the tutorial that the MVC template will be ready the week after (tutorial's time). It's more than 2 weeks later and there's no sign of it. Isn't Joe's module done and can just be attached here? I am talking about if you're creating a video tutorial based on some code, include the code. I looked at Charles Nurse's ContactList MVC example from DNN Connect and it looks like things have changed since then. I am getting an error in my simple example. I hope people who are entering the contest are not going to have a hard time developing their module because of weird errors and things are in flux between ctp's. I also don't have enough interest chasing down an error inside DNN's source code if it's going to take a long time. We need as much documentation, examples, tutorials, references, specially if you want people to start creating fully baked modules for a contest.
