My DNN Auld Lang Syne

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Customers and Community,

The time has finally come for me to bid farewell; for my DNN auld lang syne. It is with much gratitude and peace that I have decided to part from the daily operations of DNN Corp and begin a new chapter in life for family, local community and self.

What an amazing, blessed and humbling journey this has been! From my first code contribution to establishing lifelong friends in Shaun, Joe, Nik and so many others; from a simple “birds of a feather” session at Tech Ed to Dev Connections and DNN World; from the most significant MS open source project in history to a venture funded, commercially successful, world class internet solutions company!

It is tempting to write too much. But there are just too many people I would have to call out; too many wonderful friends and respected colleagues, generous and committed community members and talented and creative users and customers. I could wax philosophic and wander down too many memory lanes. But for my last blog, I would rather leave you with thoughts of the future than of the past; I would rather give encouragement than reminiscence; I would rather look to a bright future than reflect on memories past.

I am truly excited for DNN’s future! I am deeply appreciative of the talent, effort and commitment of our entire team and for the leadership and vision of Navin Nagiah, Shaun Walker and others. Though I will no longer work at DNN Corp I remain committed to DNN’s growth and success! The months and years to follow will be filled with amazing innovation in products, technology and delivery; and a healthy and flourishing community!

Thank you for allowing me to serve you. It has been both a pleasure and a privilege; a blessing to myself and my family. And so as I bid farewell, I would also bid you and yours a most joyous Christmas, a very happy new year, and a prosperous DNN future!

You were one of the first people to reach out to me in early 2003 to volunteer your time, effort, expertise, and support. This was the start of a remarkable journey and an enduring friendship. You take "stewardship" very seriously and your commitment, loyalty, perseverence, and wisdom were all instrumental in building this open source community and ecosystem. We faced many challenges along the way but I always knew that you could be relied upon to invest the blood, sweat, and tears to get the job done. One of your most admirable traits is your desire and ability to "put the boxes in the closet" - a metaphor describing the fact that you do not believe the job is finished until it is 100% done. Some people would call this a pursuit of perfection, but in your case it is just a desire to see things done right. You have never been a person to shy away from a difficult decision or fail to stand up for what you believe in. You will be missed and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Scott ... I have seen you play numerous roles at DNN from the time we shook hands in Dec 2007 – ranging from community manager, evangelist, systems administrator, web administrator, web operations, community director, finance manager amongst others. I distinctly remember my conversation with you in early 2009

… “Scott, what role do you want to play now, given we are venture funded?”

Your response, “Navin – what would you like me to do? Where can I help you?”

That speaks volumes for your ability to roll up your sleeves and do whatever job it was that needed doing, without ego and without thinking twice. That willingness has meant that you have done work that nobody else would do … and therefore kept things moving forward, especially during the earlier stages of the project and the company.

One other example I distinctly remember is … About 3 years ago, when we were talking about open source, benevolent dictator etc … I asked you about your role in this whole journey. Your response … “Do you know Leo McGarry?” I said I didn’t. You said the guy was the WH Chief of Staff in West Wing. That was how you viewed yourself – not as the ‘face’ coz you didn’t necessarily crave the publicity … but as the leader, strategist and thinker behind the scenes who did a ton of work in ensuring the success of the campaign, and the campaign here being the open source project.

It has been a long journey for you. I understand that like most long journeys … this journey has had its ups & downs, joys & sorrows, exhilarations & disappointments, energy & tiredness, hope & despondency … but, in general, it has been by every count a very rich and eventful journey. A journey that you will likely remember and cherish for many years to come.

I respect your decision. I appreciate your commitment and your contribution. I thank you for your contributions to DNN, not just this last 5 years, but also for the success of the open source project over the last decade … and for being instrumental in putting DotNetNuke on the map many years ago.

I wish you the very best in this next phase of your life.
