Team Meeting Notes from 5/7/09

Forgive me for being a little behind this week... I didn't get things posted on Friday and am sneaking this in before Allison get's up on Mothers Day!  Saturday was spent in Elma, WA (pretty much too small to Google *grin*) watching mom run her first triathlon of the year, just a little warm up for the rest of the season.  My wife is pretty amazing, almost got my 12 year old son Kyle into the race at the last minute (would have been his first) but the water was a bit too cold yet *grin*.

So this weeks meeting was a long one, but the notes are actually pretty short.

  • All Corp hands are on deck preparing for the beta release of 5.1 which is imminent.  As of the meeting, there were still several features being tweaked trying to hit 100% feature complete for the beta release.  If it is not 100% feature complete for beta one, it will be very close (and there will be the usual UI tweaking, etc. that occurs as a result of beta feedback).

  • This is the first time we have really done such a broad public beta release.  DotNetNuke has grown so much in the last few years that testing every potential use case is pretty challenging.  We’ve always made beta releases available to sponsors / benefactors, team members and even other groups of beta testers but the reality is that it’s still quite difficult to get all the feedback you need during the timeframe that you need it.  So this time our beta release will be available to the general public… and we’ll be relying on the public to augment our own rigorous testing, to identify those use cases that may need attention.  Keep an eye out for beta news soon…

  • As we are focusing on the core upgrade to 5.1… the question comes from the team about their completion dates for module compatibility to be included in the 5.1 release.  Teams are discovering that many of them have some tweaking to do as well.  The module teams also need to have testing and updates ready for beta 2.

  • Three new module versions have hit the tracker, Reports, Form and List, and Announcements.  Thank you Andrew Nurse, Stefan Cullman and Erik van Ballegoij!  Chris Paterra is dealing with a challenging work schedule but trying to get that final version of forum into the tracker as soon as possible…

  • The remainder of our time was spent in a couple of internal presentations that are part of an ongoing roundtable discussion; Build Automation for DotNetNuke projects.  Independently, many folks on the team have been working with some form of build automation for their projects and the core has been using build automation for quite some time.  As we continue moving toward a more robust Forge implementation with our friends at CodePlex, we're thinking through how to extend these kinds of services to forge participants in a standardized and flexible way.  In order to jump start that conversation, we’re asking team members to talk about what they’ve been doing personally.  This week we heard from Vicenç Masanas and Néstor Sànchez, both of whom have based much of their work on what’s been pioneered by Jon Henning.  For a few useful links:

  • 5.1 is going to keep us busy for a while… but be prepared to hear more about changes to our Forge in the weeks post 5.1… there’s more to come.

Well, I’m glad I got the coffee on before I started this… Allison is now up after recovering from a 4th place overall ladies finish yesterday… now it’s time to make waffles & head off to church.  I hope you all have a Happy Mothers Day too!

Cheers!
