New Community Website

Ordinarily, you'd be at the right spot, but we've recently launched a brand new community website... For the community, by the community.

Yay... Take Me to the Community!

The Community Blog is a personal opinion of community members and by no means the official standpoint of DNN Corp or DNN Platform. This is a place to express personal thoughts about DNNPlatform, the community and its ecosystem. Meet the Speakers: Ian Robinson

Ian Robinson, who is speaking at this year’s DotNetNuke Connections conference in Las Vegas, is having himself a busy year.  By the end of 2010, he will have visited Vietnam and The Netherlands, spoken at four conferences, helped organize the Day of DotNetNuke Chicago, and run a marathon.  Through his Twitter account (@irobinson) he’ll have also shared a wealth of insights on #dnn … and #craftbeer.  We look forward to seeing Ian again at this year’s DotNetNuke Connections event - and invite you to learn a little bit more about him in our most recent speaker Q&A.

Deploying DotNetNuke Web Sites as a Complete Solution
From Dev to Staging to Production: Enterprise Deployment Scenarios

Q.  Why are you looking forward to DotNetNuke Connections '10?
A.  I'm looking forward to DotNetNuke Connections '10 because its an invaluable opportunity to hang out with all of my peers in the community that I know on an almost all-virtual basis. It's also a great chance to get up and talk about things that I care about that are also relevant and valuable to the community. Lastly, I get to learn! That's what its all about in the end and DotNetNuke Connections is an excellent source of knowledge.

Q.  What other conferences have you attended this year?
A.  I attended the St. Louis Day of .NET and the Day of DotNetNuke Chicago.

Q. Why should people consider attending your session?
A.  Well, my first session is called "Deploying DotNetNuke Websites as a Complete Solution" - and I think this is a great session because it highlights a lot of everyday - and seemingly disparate - features of DotNetNuke working together to create something very cohesive. Utilizing DNN's installation configuration options - combined with specifically selected portal templates, skins, skin objects, and modules create a very compelling deployment story. I think the main takeaway will be just getting people thinking about how they can leverage these features to make their own lives easier - after all you can't have too much automation - can you? The second section is about deployment. This is one of those topics that is just plain necessary to talk about, not necessarily fun and exciting, but very important. I think the biggest reason to check it out will be the overview of the new content staging functionality in DotNetNuke Enterprise edition, as well as a couple different more "traditional" manual deployment scenarios. Deployment is different for every company and sometimes even for projects within a company, so it'll also be a great opportunity to see what everyone else is doing and share experiences.

Q.  When you’re not presenting, which session at DotNetNuke Connections are you most interested in attending?
A.  Well, I am certainly going to check out the MVP Development Deep Dive presentation from Charles Nurse, as that is something I've been working with more and more and am very interested in. In addition, I'm going to have to check out Brandon's Secure Module Development presentation - just because he's a great presenter and because I'm guaranteed to learn something new even though I've seen an older version of the presentation before. :)

Q. Any sessions in the concurrent tracks at DevConnections you're particularly interested in attending?
A.  I'm hopefully going to be checking out sessions by Scott Allen and Javier Lazano. I know Scott is a knowledgeable guy and a great presenter, and he's speaking on ASP.NET MVC and TDD topics that I'd like to check out. Javier has a couple of ASP.NET MVC sessions that I'd be interested in checking out as well. Also, I'll have to check out The Gu's keynote - but that goes without saying.

Q.  Any specific sights, shows, or events that you plan to make time for while in Las Vegas this fall?
A.  Nope, I just go with the flow. I was already out in Vegas earlier this year for a friend's birthday so I think I'll be all conference this trip...if I can help it!

Q. How long have you been part of the DotNetNuke community?
A.  I joined the DotNetNuke community in January of 2006 - so getting kind of close to 5 years now!

Q. What area of DotNetNuke do you specialize in?
A.  I specialize in extension development, but end up doing a little of everything. Though, after a number of years working with a variety of clients and projects using DNN - I think one of the areas I'm most effective in these days is taking a holistic look at a project and figuring out the best ways to make use of what is provided by DotNetNuke combined with custom extensions.

Q. What is one thing you wished everyone knew about DotNetNuke?
A.  How to properly case and space the name! [DotNetNuke] Which is to say camel-cased and without the spaces, of course.  But more importantly, a framework is what you make of it and DotNetNuke is no exception. As with anything it's still the responsibility of the developer/implementer to make responsible decisions when crafting a web site!

Q.  What is the DotNetNuke web site you’re most proud of?
A.  I'm most fond of Although it doesn't get nearly enough attention from me as it should - I think it provides a lot of value for the community in showcasing the wide range of great sites built on DotNetNuke.
