Hello,

I asked this in a comment to Ash's blog post, but then I figured the forums might be a better place.

In the old messaging system, there was no way to turn off emails to the user. I always thought that was a mistake. In 6.2, I think it would be a huge mistake. As the system pushes in a direction of more social engagement, and so, hopefully, more messages and notifications, users need to be able to control email preferences. So, will it be possible for users to control preferences on when they want to be emailed from DNN's messaging system?

I just think these messages could get abused very quickly. I would also think it gets a little spam-ish if the only way a person can stop getting emails from your site is to delete their account.

I didn't see any setting for it in the Beta - so, does anybody know - can we disable emails from the messaging system?

Thanks,

Mike

Ash is currently PTO so I wouldnt expect an answer - as for settings, no, not in 6.2.0, but we're talking about adding some later on (e.g. get all mails in a daily batch email etc.). However it's not as "bad" a problem as the original messaging - it allowed you to send to any portal user. In the new messaging system only admins/hosts can send to any user - normal users can only send to friends and followers, so if you're not in that state for a user they cant send mail to you (unless you're a member of a social group that they own)

Thanks for the explanation - that sounds good.

Yeah, I definitely think it's important that people can control email preferences. I know, personally, when sites don't let me control what emails they send me, I get pretty annoyed pretty quickly. Depending on how this plays out in our testing, we might just need to hold off on launching until the later update.

Thanks,

Mike

BTW you can also set an interval (the gap between messages) and a throttling setting (how many users a message can go to) via the messaging settings in admin->site settings

Cathal,

In the current 6.2.0 release, I can send a message to anyone not just friends and followers - will this change in 6.2.1?

It would be great to have the flexibility to restrict messaging.

Also how do I view/change group moderators if group owners/moderators can only send to their group?

Thanks
