Mike Taulty, Scott Hanselman, Jeff Atwood, Rick Strahl, Joel Spolsky, Michael Campbell, Mitch Denny, David Yack, Frans Bouma, Greg Duncan, Sam Gentile and many others have all installed and tried out Windows Vista. The big question is whether or not I am ready to take the plunge.
As these various bloggers/geeks have attested, Vista has some good and some not so good aspects. I just don't know whether I am yet ready for the upheaval that moving to Vista is sure to cause. As I talked about in my previous post, "Repaving in a Virtual World", I would like to run everything in a bunch of Virtual Machines. My plan was to run Vista as the Host OS with various OSs in the virtual machines. Unfortunately, some reports indicate that neither Virtual PC, nor VMWare run correctly on Vista RC1.
So, do I become the Geek equivalent of the Lemming? Throwing myself off the Vista cliffs because all the other Geek Lemmings have already done so? In the end maybe the Navy OS1 who used to work for me had it right when he said that Officer's were like crows because we were always attracted to bright, shiny objects. If you believe the Windows marketing literature (and who doesn't believe everything the marketing people say), it doesn't get much shinier that Aero.
