Commercial Open Source Business Traction in 2009

I am a regular reader of Matt Asay’s “Open Road” blog on CNET as I generally find his commentary on the business and politics of open source to be informative, insightful, and thought provoking. Last week Matt posted a blog about the fact that commercial open source had very good year in 2009. In the article, he mentioned the progress of a number of companies with commercial open source offerings, including SugarCRM whose CEO, Larry Augustin, is also on our Board of Directors.

Earlier this week, DotNetNuke Corporation published its own press release related to the momentum we experienced in 2009. To recap some of the highlights:

• We acquired nearly 500 new subscription customers since we launched our first commercial product, DotNetNuke Professional Edition, in February 2009.
• We established a business center of gravity in San Mateo, California, USA and an engineering center of gravity in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and added a number of satellite office locations internationally.
• We signed up nearly 50 commercial partners and resellers through our Fusion Partner Program.
• We acquired Snowcovered in August 2009, the most high profile marketplace for DotNetNuke extensions and a key strategic asset in our future vision for the platform. In 2009, Snowcovered.com completed nearly 40,000 transactions to almost 15,000 customers.
• We partnered with Telerik, a leading vendor of development tools and user interface components for .NET, allowing us to integrate and distribute their RAD Controls for ASP.NET AJAX toolset with the DotNetNuke platform.
• We hosted two major DotNetNuke conferences; OpenForce North America ( partnered with DevConnections in Las Vegas, Nevada ), and OpenForce Europe ( partnered with the Software Development Network in The Netherlands ).

By any account, 2009 was a huge year for DotNetNuke! And with some big announcements coming in the next few weeks, we are well positioned to make 2010 an even bigger success!
