6.2 Cometh!

Today we released Beta1 of DotNetNuke 6.2.

Seems not that long ago that we released 6.0 with its new UI and infrastructural switch to C#. Even more recently, in November, we added Mobile support to the platform in the form of 6.1, and have been incrementally enhancing 6.1 each month. This culminated in the 6.1.5 release made on Wednesday, April 4th, in which we changed to using the 51 Degrees.mobi device detection and database. Besides bringing benefits to Professional and Enterprise Edition customers, our CE customers now have Device Detection Management and Site Redirection Management built-in.

But the real story today is 6.2...

It's mainly about Social. Assuming no one has been in a coma, we all know the value of Social capabilities in the form of online interactions with our friends and families. Those capabilities will be in 6.2, but there is much more. Leveraging Social is also about engaging people outside your business or community. It's about interactions with suppliers, customers, partners and more! It's about leveraging communities in a much broader sense to highlight success, resolve problems, capture and share information, and have fun. What's cool in 6.2 is that not only are these capabilities present, but that they are integrated with other facets of DotNetNuke that people know and love. Plus, imagine social-enabling your apps — it's all there and easy to do!

Of course, we didn't stop there. There is lots more functionality that you'll find in the release. Major enhancements to Messaging and the new Notifications capabilities, 3rd party registration (e.g. Facebook), and super responsive client-side UI  — will provide lots of benefits.

If that isn't enough, I'd like to remind people about the new DotnetNuke Services Framework. (See Scott Schlesier's blog at www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/BlogID/245.aspx for details, as well as Peter Donker's at www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/BlogID/211.aspx for insights on authorization using the Services Framework.) This is a terrific enhancement to DotNetNuke, and we're already using it to deliver our Social, Messaging, and Notifications features.

Indeed, there are lots of reasons to be excited about 6.2 and I urge you to check out Beta1. We've still got some work to do in the way of fixing bugs, integrating some features, tuning the UI and polishing up the release; however, there is lots there today and we look forward to your feedback.

And before I forget, I recommend checking out the recently published DotNetNuke UX Guide at uxguide.dotnetnuke.com/UIFormPatterns/Overview/tabid/230/Default.aspx . It offers wonderful examples and usage patterns which can help improve the caliber of your sites.

As always, please let us know what you think!

Thanx!
