Introducing Github Project Hosting in the DotNetNuke Forge

If you are an open source extension developer for DotNetNuke who is also a github fan, we have some good news for you. As of today, developers can choose either CodePlex or github when creating a new Forge extension project on our site. This support also includes the ability for github hosted project releases to find their way to the DotNetNuke extension feed, available in all DotNetNuke installs as of 6.0.

Design Updates
The last major version of the Forge is just over a year old. Since then there have been minor updates to keep up to date with the changes introduced in 6. Some of the recent changes made were to facilitate future enhancements coming up with the 6.2 launch. If you are familiar with the Community Exchange on this site, the two now have a very similar user interface.

CodePlex or Github?
The choice is yours. CodePlex hosted projects are created just as they were before, we ask you a name and then pass you off to CodePlex (if you already have a project there, we ask you some more info and never send you to the CodePlex site). If you choose github, you provide your github username and then select a repository (Short video). Please note that your repository on github must be public. It's also worth mentioning that their is no way to 'transfer' between the two.

Github Releases
CodePlex handles releases very differently from github. In order to accommodate both, and the needs of the Extension Feed Service, github users must have downloads available using the .zip file extension in order to create a release in the Forge. Project owners can add releases from their project home screen's version tab.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be tweaking the user experience based on feedback (please send to forge AT dotnetnuke.com> as well as working on some updates for the 6.2 launch. Hope you enjoy!
