My client is asking me to provide secure upload to the gallery root. I have secure FTP for the client but that maps to a big Linux-based RAID NAS. Is there a way to set the gallery root to somewhere outside of /portals/N ?

No. For security reasons, the Gallery root is restrictued to being located within the Portals/<Portal#>/ folder.

The solution was rather simple.
  1. Add a Virtual Directory in IIS within /portals/<portal#>/gallery/
    1. The physical path must be in \\NasIpAddress\Share\Folder format
