I am building a new site from scratch and during the last weeks I am wondering why I put a forum on my site. After more thought I put it there because 'I was used working with forums' but is it needed with the current solutions like Social Groups. Should I just forget the forums? It feels like I will cause confusion on my site offering a forum, it does not add any value IMHO...my 2cts

Like anything, it depends. For organized, hierarchical, detailed discussions forums work well. For quick, short messages the journal might do either in general or within a group.

I've had issues on sites that have implemented both group forums and group journals where user's don't know what to post where. I've generally found keeping forums out of groups (and on their own) to work out better.

Finally, our team is moving away from forums entirely to a Q & A model (our own, not DNN's) as we feel most of our technical users find forums to be harder to use, find, search for specific answers to technical questions.

Thanks Steven! I still have time to make a decision. It is interesting to see that you keep forums out of your groups while I am working on integration but maybe I make a mistake. Just for that reason I decided in favor of ActiveForums and did not choose YAF though YAF is the 'better' forum IMHO. Another reason for my question is that I am uncertain where 'the industry' is moving towards. Most of the time I am not a follower and choose my own route but there is a little voice telling me that makes it difficult to move forward.
