I have created a link to a flash file (swf) on our site.  When I click on the link, the browser does not recognize it as a Flash file and tries to save it instead of playing.  Any ideas why I can open a Flash file on the site?

You need to put the SWF on a HTML page or use a proper module, e.g. Media or Text/HTML module, insert it using the insert flash button of FCKEditor.

Thanks.  That would work but what I am trying to design is a page that has a list of links that link to a flash demonstration.  I would prefer not to create a new page with a media module for every flash demonstration.  Is there a way to click on a link and pass the name of the flash file to something so i don't have to create so many pages?

You might use userdefined table module, including a rich text column to insert the flash and other columns for name and description or whatever needed.

You will need to switch display mode to predefined XSL. using advanced template or create a custom master-detail display using the built-in XSL generator (sounds more complex that to use).
