Hello all.

I have media files that I would like to stream to site subscribers via the DNN Media Module.  I want to secure these files so that they will only be available to those for whom I turn access on.

I have been able to get my MP3 files to stream when the permissions for the folder that contains the files is set to allow "All" to access.  Having the container folder set to allow access to "All" creates a vulnerability though since right-clicking on the media control exposes a direct URL to the file that anyone (unregistered users, etc.) can access.

The problem is... when I restrict the containing folder by removing the "All" access, I am unable to stream the file.  I sign is as host and I see that the Administrator has access but no luck - even though I would expect that the SuperUser login would be able to access the files.

This behavior is present regardless of how I set the containing folder up... (Standard - File System, Secure - File System, Secure - Database).

My primary question is...  is anyone having luck streaming MP3 files with the Media Module with the media container folder in the File Manager set to having permissions of anything other than "All"?

Thanks in advance.

Nobody using the Media module with media container-folder's permissions set to anything other than "All"?

If the folder permissions in the File Manager are not set to allow the file to be viewed, and it's a secure folder then this is not actually an issue with the module. This is an intentional artifact of the security system in DNN. Simply adding permissions to that folder for anonymous visitors or moving the file to a non-secure location should fix things.

Thanks for your reply Will.

My folders use the DNN "Standard - File System" (i.e. not "Secure").  I have tried "Secure - File System" and "Secure - Database" with the same behavior - only able to stream if there are zero folder restrictions (i.e. folder permissions must be set to "All").  With folder permissions set to "All", the files are accessible via a direct URL which defeats my purpose of only making them available to site subscribers with certain permissions.

To clarify:

Unless the folder permissions are set to "All" (i.e. open to the world) the Media Module will not stream the file.

Which also means that...

There is no way to restrict access to a media file to a filtered set of subscribers AND still have the file stream.

The desired behavior that I was hoping for was that the file would be accessible and would stream to subscribers but to no one else (via a direct URL).  In its current state, this does not appear to be the case.  Please confirm.  It would be great if I am wrong on this.

Thanks,

Art

I was just able to duplicate this with the latest version of the Media Module using both secure and non-secure folders.  It is working as intended on a clean install.

Here's what I did...

  1. Clean install of DNN
  2. Installed v03.03.00 of the Media Module
  3. Created a Secure and Non-Secure folder
  4. Gave "Registered Users" only view permissions
  5. Uploaded media to each new folder
  6. Added two instances of the Media Module on a new page on the site
  7. Each module chose media from one of the two new folders
  8. When the page is viewed as a registered user, the media shows
  9. When the page is viewed without being logged in, the media is unavailable
This is intended behavior at this time.  Are you experiencing something different?  Is there something else I didn't do or could do to help you trouble shoot this or determine a fix?
