My e-mail notifications used to work with Godaddy. However, now they don't. I tried to setup the gmail SMTP and those don't work either.

With Godaddy, I had relay-hosting.secureserver.net, anonymous, evertything else blank. That used to work.  Godaddy maintains that it's not their problem despite the fact that I changed NOTHING and it just all of a sudden stopped working.  The error I get when testing their server is:

There has been an error trying to send the test email. The error is:
Mailbox name not allowed. The server response was: sorry, your mail was administratively denied. (#5.7.1)

I decided to try gmail's SMTP as follows:

smtp.gmail.com:587
my authentication to basic
enabled SSL
and put in my username and password

I also tried port 465, which supposedly supports SSL.

I also tried to use NTLM with and without SSL.. no luck

Error message is either timeout or:

Error: Host Settings is currently unavailable.

Hi M,

Unfortunately you are going to have to contact GoDaddy regarding your issue.  The error message that you listed indicates that GoDaddy is blocking permission for you to be able to send.

I figured it out.

Godaddy is NOT letting me do either of the following: send from a gmail account using their relay-hosting.secureserver.net SMTP server, nor send from a gmail account using a specific port (they block the ports).

What I had to do was:

Change the host e-mail in host-settings to be do-not-reply@domainname.com

Change the admin e-mail account to be do-not-reply@domainname.com

Now using relay-hosting.secureserver.net works.

In other words, if I send from a FAKE address that isn't gmail, I can use the godaddy SMTP server.  It does suck though, because I wanted users to be able to reply.

make sure, the admin email is valid and allowed to send from your host's email server.

it is specified in admin :: Users menu item for the user, specified in site settings as admin user.
