What could i have setup incorrect.

Firewall is off on both machines.

please make sure, you enabled TCP/IP protocol for SQL server and client and also configured the sql server for remote access.

Thanks, that is working great.

but now another question, i need to move all of my dnn database's from the old server to the new one. Is there detailed instructions somewhere that can tell me how to do this?

in old server, detach databases, copy database files to new server and attach as new database. In server security, map your server logins to database users, you might need to delete existing users first.
