Hello, everyone. I've been a web developer for about 3 years now, primarily as a PHP developer and not as much on the .NET side of things. I've been working with DotNetNuke for about 4 weeks now in a local development environment.

I've managed to go through Chris Hammond's Module Development walkthrough, and I feel ready to approach module development. My task is to explore DNN's extensibility with custom solutions, whether through creating modules from scratch or extending the functionality of existing modules. Specifically, I was told to look into adding features to the Events/Calendar module.

What do you guys recommend as far as how to approach this best? Is there a way to create a module and tell it to inherit from the Events module entirely, then apply the additional functionality, or would a better approach be to completely copy the source code and modify it directly? Or is it simpler to just start from scratch, using the Events source as inspiration?

I'd look at modifying the original code. If that doesn't work, create your own. I've had to do this on a few occasions and the approach is different each time.

If you post up in the Events module subforum, you might get some insights from the module developers (Roger Selwyn and Ernst Peter Tamminga) http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/20/scope/threads.aspx

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Pingle, I'll try asking there.
