I wanted to ask this question (hopefully before the release of DNN 5.5).

What happens if someone with rights to the "Site Settings" page goes ahead and deletes the page or the module from the page?

The "Site Settings" page holds a module with the friendly name "Portals", but to an Admin, the Portals module does not appear in the drop-down of the list of available modules, meaning that an Admin cannot "rebuild" a deleted "Site Settings" page/module.

Likewise, the "Portals" module is not available to the Super User, meaning that they cannot "rebuild" that page as well. They do have the ability to view/edit the site settings via the Host->Portals page, but they cannot "rebuild" the "Site Settings" page for an admin.

I understand why it's possible to remove the "Site Settings" page from a portal (for those cases where a host does not want a portal's Administrator to be able to change the settings - useful for protecting novice admins from "breaking" their site). But I think it would be helpful is there was a way for the Super User to rebuild the Site Settings page/module.

FYI, I only tested this in 5.4.4, but it's such an "out-there" edge case that the possibility probably never occurred to anyone. Still, some of the "administrators" I've known might go and do as foolish a thing as delete their Site Settings page/module.

p.s. - sorry about the triple posting (ouch!). I got an error page when I hit submit, and didn't see it appear yet in the forum listing, so I tried again (twice, it appears)

I would assume the deleted entry would be in the recycle bin so could be recovered. If the bin had been cleared then there is no installable module for it as the admin/host entries are not installed as modules. As their installation can be controlled by site/host templates, the need to make them (re)installable modules hasn't been on the roadmap. If someone deletes one they can always create a new module definition, select the control option and point it at the relevant ascx.

Hi Cathal,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, someone with development experience can re-create it, but there's no readily-apparent web-based way to re-create the Site Settings page/module (other than the recycle bin, which you've mentioned).

It's probably such a low issue item that it'll never get on the roadmap, which is fine, but I thought it worth asking. I ran into the question while making a module that was going through the tabs, and the question just popped into my head.

It's a valid question, but as you guessed it's rarely asked , and then most of the type it's resolved via forum answers. You're welcome to add it as an enhancement request to support.dotnetnuke.com .
