Dear DNN Guru
I installed the DNN 8.0.4 on my desktop Windows 10 and IIS10 successfully, but when I want to deploy DNN 8.0.4 on the Windows Server 2012 standard, IIS10, the installing was failed. Before installing, I setup the DNN app fold security with adding NETWORK SERVICE fully control to the fold. I am not sure if some specific settings need to be processed or the DNN 8.0.4 is not appropriate for installing on Windows Server 2012. Please help me to fix the problems. The following is the failed information:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Access to the path 'C:\onlineclassroom\web.config' is denied.

Your DotNetNuke installation appears to have a security settings problem (most likely permissions). DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and themes. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Disable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.
If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
◦the [SERVER]\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6 or Vista/Windows 2008 - IIS7
◦the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

Jimmy,

it is not necessarily NETWORK SERVICE that needs the security, please check under which account the AppPool is started.

That might be NETWORK SERVICE, but if you find something like AppPool Identity there it is an account called "IIS AppPool\AppPoolName", or IUSR, depending on the settings for anonymous authentication of the web site.

Happy DNNing!
Michael

Dear Michael

Thank you very much for your advices. I check the Application pool to find that the start account is ApplicationPoolIdentity. I change this to NETWORK SERVICE, and then start install DNN 8.0.4. Successful!!! But I still have some questions. 1. When I change to the NETWORK SERVICE, all other sites AppPool in Win Server 2012 IIS10 also changed to NETWORK SERVICE automatically. Does that means all sites in IIS10 should use the same start account for AppPool? 2. Why the account for starting AppPool on my desk top Win10, IIS10, is also ApplicationPoolIdentity, Its successful when I install DNN 8.0.4.?

Thank you again!

Best Regards

Jimmy Wang

you may specify any account for any app pool (and use dedicated app pools per site).
You may continue using App Pool Identity as well, but assigning permission and impersonating it for SQL Server is a bit different.
