DNN is open source - I suggest having a look at UpdateUser procedure in DNN Platform/Library/Entities/Users/UserController.cs

Hey! you are absolutely right. I don't know why I didn't think of reviewing the code before.

DataCache.ClearUserCache seems to do the trick and it looks like it is working.

I'll definitely push for using DNN API in the future but in the meantime at least I have a reliable workaround. 

I really appreciate you guys taking the time to answer these questions.
