Hi,
The Security Analyzer tells me to set passwordFormat="Hashed". It is currently set to "Encrypted". Is there any risk to doing this, which I should be aware of? Can you give be more info on this before I update it on our live website?

Thank you,
Tom

Hi Tom,
hashed passwords are more secure, as they cannot be retrieved (only the hash values are compared).
If you change it in your web.config, this will not affect existing passwords, i.e. you should request all your registered users to update their password.

Cheers from Germany,

Thanks Sebastian,

I am also dealing with the password issue, while trying to get authentication working using the DNN_ActiveDirectoryAuthentication extension (5.0.6)

One of my issues with that is that when i try to log in using the Windows login, I get an error which stated "Hashed passwords cannot be decoded" .

In web.config, I've tried using "enablePasswordRetreval=true" and "password Format=Encrypted", and setting "passwordFormat="Clear" but still receive the same error.

What are the implications of using hashed vs Encrypted vs Clear password format? This is for an intranet website (inside a private network)

Thanks again!

AD provider might need passwords to be encrypted - sorry, I haven't used it extensively.
Please note: even if you change default format in web.config. this will not affect existing accounts until the password got updated.

Thanks, I did note that (about passwords) from your earlier message. I appreciate it. I will be changing them.

If you know anywhere I could get more info about AD provider please let me know.

Thanks

Tom
