Possible that this is an IIS config issue, please check this stack overflow question:

Got a newly setup Windows 2012 Server R2, IIS 8.5, SQL Server 2012
Followed the standard DNN installation process but was getting a 500 error when I browsed to the site.
After following the instructions in the link provided above and restarting the server was able to complete the installation wizard.

When the wizard completed and I clicked "visit website" i saw the 500 error once more - but it disappeared when i hit Ctrl+F5 and the website loads.

I am glad you were able to get your site running. It is just not easy to fit to all possible server configurations gracefully.
The 500 might have shown up due to cached data.

Cheers from Germany,
Sebastian Leupold
