I was hoping to use this module to hook to a separate SQL Server 2005 database and report on some data. If I understand all the post that I am seeing this functionality does not currently exists in this module?

Basically, I want to connect to a SQL Server database, read a table containing links to documents and return the data back in a grid or list so that the links can be selected. Is this possible with this module or do I need a third party module and if so what is recommended?

This should absolutely be possible using the latest version Reports Module.  Just select the Microsoft SQL Server Data Source on the Settings page and configure your connection details and query as appropriate!
