I just looked at the article your link to.

You should see that the updated logging function I pasted above does nothing more than including the information described in the article directly in the dnn Application_End log event.

The information logged is still relatively parse on what's exactly occuring. If you want to digg further, you might want to install Network Monitor 3.3 and filter the SMB2 packets.

That allowed us to actually see the SMB2 commands that shoot the Application_Pool.

Going further and logging the actual failing IIS event would be a little trickier since it requires a DebugDiag dump and the appropriate symbols to make sense of it, but Ms does not ship them.

You may have a look at the following kb article for hints on what could be happening:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281253

Good luck with fixing your issue.

We had the same issue and no matter what we did we continued experiencing App Restarts.  After capturing DebugDiag output and analysis by Microsoft showed that one of the scheduled jobs that was writing log files in Portals\_default\ folder was causing FileChangeNotifications which was causing App Restarts.  We eventually fixed it by changing the registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ASP.NET\FCNMode to 1 which disables FileChangeNotifications completely.  More information about this registry key can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911272 .  We are seeing very few App Restarts now, only when the site has unloaded and fallen out of memory.

There are few things to keep in mind when changing this registry key.

If you install any module you need to perform iisreset or recycle App Pool for the changes to take effect.

If you make any changes to web.config, Global.asax, any file under App_Code folder, or modify or add any new DLL, or any other changes that would normally trigger an App restart, now require an iisreset or App pool recycle.

We have seen the sites to be very stable and the performenace to be really good now that it is not restarting as often.

Thanks for the info, I'll see whether disabling it is a better way forward, so far we have taken the approach to restrict what the HOST user can update/change during working hours.
