i don't know if this will help Nick2000 but i found this thread on google so i hope this post helps someone out there...

anyway, i just went throught the same exact thing. dnn install would get to the point where it installs a portal and it would crash:
Creating Portal: My Website
    Error: Thread was being aborted.

i tried deleting the files, db, etc, and starting over a number of times and nothing seemed to help.

finally, i did the follwing
1) give "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" account access to %windir%\temp (this was done early on)
2) give "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" account db_owner privileges on the db i created for dnn

#2 seems to have done the trick after i, yet again, deleted the db and ran
