I have a few questions regarding the templates available for DNN modules. Any help would be appreciated =)

1) What are the key differences between the DNN module templates available? (Which ones should I be using? Are any of the templates scheduled to be deprecated?)

The templates I see available are: 7/8/9 Compiled Module, 7/8/9 DAL2 Compiled Module, 8/9 DAL2 MVC Module, and 8/9 DAL2 SPA Module. I'm developing for DNN v8.0.4.

2) Is there a way to determine which template a module project was created from?

3) What's the best resource you would recommend for learning more about DNN module development?

Thanks

1. There really are 3 types of modules included in the DNN Module Templates provided by the Visual Studio DNN Templates https://github.com/ChrisHammond/DNNTe...

  • MVC Module Template
  • SPA Module Template
  • Skin Module Template

The MVC and SPA Templates use ASP.NET MVC and Web API respectively to create your module. The Skin Module is designed for applying custom skins or themes to your website. AFAIK these templates are not going anywhere as they support DNN 9 and Visual Studio 2017.

2. I would start by looking at the controllers, if you methods are returning a View() most likely it is MVC if it is returning something like JsonContent then you are probably using a SPA Template

3. Here is a list of links that you may find helpful for getting started in DNN Module Development

Hope this helps
