Hi all,
I'm curious about this in the event it happens. My web server is a virtual machine, and so what happens if I have to move that machine from one server to another?. I'm mostly thinking of the dates on posts and what not ... whether they will be correctly preserved ... thinking of upgrading my web server to Windows server 2016; why this question has arisen in the first place. I've never had to do a restore before, and frankly, I'd rather not, but you know how luck goes sometimes.

moving should be easy, as long as you are aware of the following effects:
- timestamps are stored in server time, ideally your new server should use same time zone
- if the name of the database server or database changes, you need to update all (uncommented) connection strings in your web.config
- if the domain name of a website changes, you'll need to update portal alias table in the database (or use UI in Admin > Site Settings prior to the move)

thanks for that. I figured it wouldn't be too difficult; that's the beauty of virtual machines anyway; easier than backing up physical servers ... though not that I've got a "proper" backup anyway; the best I can do is move my stuff from one drive to another.
