I have a DNN instance running a few portals. I want to secure one portal with an SSL certificate. I can do this through Plesk easily enough on a single portal site by installing an SSL cert on the domain and adding a redirect to the web.config to redirect the entire site to https://

 <rewrite>

      <rules>

        <rule name="HTTP to HTTPS redirect" stopProcessing="true">

          <match url="(.*)">

          </match>

          <conditions>

            <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="off" ignoreCase="true">

            </add>

          </conditions>

          <action type="Redirect" redirectType="Permanent" url="https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}">

          </action>

        </rule>

      </rules>

    </rewrite>

But this wont work on a DNN instance with multiple portals as it will try to redirect all the sites that don't have ssl yet to https://. Any advice appreciated!

Maybe I'm going about this all wrong?

you would assign both, http and https to your iis website.
In DNN, you would enable "Use SSL" and "Force SSL" options in Admin > Site Settings.
For each page, you need to enable "isSecure" setting (or use SQL, running UPDATE dbo.Tabs SET isSecure = 1 where PortalID = 127 (or whatever portalid you are using)
