One of my sites currently uses a skin (CleanWeb Royal Blue) that does not use the full width of the screen when displayed on a desktop. It's an industry news site with many articles, and I do not plan to replace the skin anytime soon. But I want to use the empty real estate on the sides, either for ads or for clickable images of my other sites. How can I accomplish this? The site is cleaningbusinesstoday.com. Keep in mind that if the solution requires Javascript, that my knowledge in that area is very limited.

Thanks for your help,

Austin

a background is usually not an active (clickable) element of your page.
There are possible workarounds, but you should consider not to "trick" your visitors.

Changing the width is easy, but that will not give you more space to add extra columns, it will just make the columns wider.

In this file:

 Change:

    margin: 0 auto;
    max-width: 960px;
    min-width: 767px;
    position: relative;
    width: 100%;

You would need to change the skin to do this.

Either - add the images and links directly to the skin - that makes them identical and compulsory on every page.

Or - add new panes to the skin and use standard DNN administration tools to insert modules in to the panes. That makes them optional on each page and individually configurable per page.

Thanks for your reply, Sebastian. Perhaps I wasn't clear my the purpose and goal with the question. I do not want unsuspecting users to click in blank space and be taken to a link. "Tricking" our readers would not be ethical or smart. I want to create images in the background area that will appear as a column of rectangular ads, and for them to be stationary as the user scrolls. The top ad, for example, would be a subscribe button. In the past, we did have a floating javascript subscribe button, but on mobile devices it obscured the content. It floated to the top and got in the way of reading. By using the background area, I hope to make the subscribe button and other ads "sticky" throughout the site for desktop users, while not getting in the way of content for people viewing the site on a smart phone.
