I am a total newbie so googling the error didn't help me!

At this time I will refrain from naming names as I've used this one particular hosting company for many years without issues, but I am having one now! I've opened multiple support tickets with them with no response all day (they usually get back to me within a few hours at most).

Our website went down this morning and I am trying to get it back up and running. Without contact from the web hosting company to help (which also had all my back up files), I was trying to figure out other ways I might still get it back up and running. I thought worst case if I could download my files and open a new account with a new host and upload them there I could just change my dns records to point the new host and get the site back up and running.

I've tried logging into my web host control panel and when I go to the file manager the root folder is empty and there is an error: Error getting the files list. Exception has been thrown by the target of invocation. Can anyone please help me!

Thank you! Jody

You may be able get your files by using FTP to bypass the panel software error.

Even so you would still need to be able to get a backup of your DB before you could think about migrating to another host.

Hosting issues are a bummer but they happen.  If you have had good luck for years then you are doing pretty well.  I would make a phone call if you haven't already...  Maybe they have a reasonable explanation.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. I finally was able to get a hold of someone from the host company and they said they were battling an attack on their server and that was why the site was down. They also said the site would be restored once the attack was blocked. I could not even get there through FTP which was why I was freaking out.

Lesson learned, I need to get back up copies emailed to me! Any suggestion on a service where I can automate the backup and have it either emailed to me or put somewhere (dropbox, etc)? I have multiple clients (about 10 different websites) which I realize I should be doing for each one of them (and not relying on hosting company to back them up).

Thank you! Jody

There are several companies that specialize in automated backup solutions.

I use the scheduled tasks inside of the panel software to automate the backup process of both the DB and web files.  I then always have my own recent backup on the host.  I will occasionally download these copies so that I have fairly recent backups locally.   It has worked well for me so far.

Backup should be part of the hosting plan, due to the size of the backup of all files and the database, email is not advisable.
