Setting up a new instance on DNN on a test server, I'm seeing this error.

I already have one instance of DNN running on the same server,  pointing to a different database on the same (test) database server, working fine.

I copied  my current set of DNN files from the live server, and copied the database from live db server to this test db server.

Pointed the website in IIS to the newly copied DNN files.

In the web.config, I updated the connection string to the name of the newly copied database.

I updated the portal alias in the database so that it should work from the test URL/domian name .

I updated the permissions on the files to match those of the  files of the working instance on the same test server (Setting NETWORK SERVICE to full control etc).

Restarted the website and trying to browse, but still getting "DNN Error -  Connection to the Database Failed"

Anything else I should do in order to get this wroking?

Thanks

Tom

Did you verify the newly copied/renamed database is running via SQL Server Configuration Manager or Computer Management consoles?
Is the SQL connection string 100% correct for the SQL Server name and the database name?
In the SQL connection string what permissions are you specifying? is the same permission set applied on the SQL Server to the database you're specifying in the connection string?

Ideally you should be able to open SQL Server Mgmt. Studio and connect to the new database with the permission set you've specified in the connection string in web.config

Thanks for your reply.

The connection strings for database name and server name are correct.

The newly copied database is on the same server as the previous (working) instance. How do I check whether the database is running via SQL Server Configuration Manager or Computer Management consoles?

Not sure about the permissions. I don't see anything in the connection string about permissions (not in the previous working version either). Where would I find that?

thanks

If it's strictly DB connectivity that you are checking you can also open notepad and save the file as test.UDL to your desktop.  Once you click on it, it should give you simple interface to verify your connection strings.
