I make extensive use of the sub calendar capability to groups and display events in different formats. I have some calendars that are intended only for display of one or more sub calendars, but there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the Add capability. This is confusing when I set up a site and turn over content maintenance, since the obvious question is " if you didn't want me to add events there, why is there a plus sign".

I am doing the same in our intranet solution. The "main" calendar (that only displays events from other calendars) does not allow any groups (except Admins of course) to edit the calendar (which is inherited from the page settings in my case, only View permissions for "All Users"). The Plus sign is gone. So first I would check the permissions from the page and the module.

If that is not the case on your site I would upgrade the calender module to its newest version (, and if the problem persits contact the developers by creating an issue there.

If you want to hide the button from ALL viewers (including site admins), you could locate the ID of the button and use CSS to force a display:none. However, it will still display on the Action menu. You could also add explicit deny permissions for the users to prevent them from adding events to that calendar.

Just don't give the user moderator/editor/admin access to the relevant read only module in standard module permissions. It is those sets of permissions which provide the add capability. This is inline with Michael's suggestion.

Doesn't work for admins. Now I could take away admin but that would mean I'd have to take over a bunch of other activity I don't wish to. It's the admin of the site that's asking for this.

I think it's a legitimate ask, if the calendar is only for display of one or more sub-calendars, designating it as such would reduce the chance of error and make the usage more clear for those that come afterward.
