Hi,

I'm experiencing a performance issue on our DNN 7.1.2 instance.

We've got a site set up with multiple pages, of which one page contains a lot of modules, just over 50 on the one page.

When entering edit mode on the page with 50+ modules, the page hangs.

At first the page loads fine, but the loading hang when initializing the edit buttons for all modules. A dotted line is displayed for the edit buttons to be displayed in, but the buttons are not displayed yet.
Instead of the buttons appearing within 1-2 seconds (like on all other pages), the page keeps loading for around 25 seconds before the buttons appear. Some of the times, Chrome and Firefox display a "Unresponsive script" popup, asking if I want to kill the script.

The modules are all normal HTML modules, 50 of them containing only an html anchor with a small image (+= 10kb) inside.

Here's what I tried:

- I tried commenting our javascript, to make sure those aren't the cause of the performance issue, this made no difference in the loading time
- I applied the Gravity skin instead of our custom skin, to exclude anything else as cause for this issue.
- other pages on the same site with less modules, load the edit mode within 1-2 seconds, so it's not a server performance issue.
- I tested in Chrome, Firefox and IE10, all are displaying the same behavior.
- I switched the Controlbar to Ribbonbar in the host settings because of known issues with the Controlbar performance. this made no difference

Is this a known issue, would there be anything I can try to get the performance to a more acceptable level?

Thanks in advance,

Hanneke

What's changed? Is the page new? Did it work fine with 50 modules for years? months? Has there been an upgrade since anyone last edited the page?

Best wishes,

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply.

The whole site / portal is actually new (2 weeks old).

Though the instance itself was updated before creating this site from 5 to 6 to DNN 7.

The Content Manager added the page and the modules. When he was finished he complained he could hardly manage the content because the edit mode was so slow.

My assumption is that the loading time got longer as more modules were added to the page. But that's just an assumption.

50 modules on a single page is a fairly uncommon scenario, so I would guess that it's simply a performance issue - as part of the page updates the DOM via javascript I'm not sure there will be much that can be done as if the DOM grows very large changes are slow. You're certainly welcome to log it to support.dnnsoftware.com so we can investigate but I've no idea what timeframe that might be due to the edge nature of this.

I should have asked why you're using 50 text modules in this way - if you explain the reason perhaps there is an alternative approach/module that would be better.
