Is it possible to select a user (or multiple users) by a custom property? e.g. select all users who are having their birthday today.

I've found a source on how to query the database directly (it's actually about some clever pivotting of a table, but it shows the database diagram relevant for my question): http://www.r2integrated.com/blog/inde...
But I expect querying the database directly is a bad thing to do. Or has (this part of) the DNN database solidified enough to safely access the database directly?

The other approach I found is to get a single property from a single user. http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/F..., which I don't expect to be very efficient when dealing with larger amounts of users and/or properties to check.

 What would be your advise?

The Reports module lets you run SQL queries (and display the selected records from a SELECT query).

Only HOST-level users can access/modify the SQL statements used. There's nothing wrong with querying the backend database directly.  MODIFYING data, on the other hand, can be risky (if you don't know what all of the related records are that also need to be updated).
