I develop many DNN modules in my company and I've a question about DAL2.
Why I can't find any usage of DAL2 in DNN source code?
The lastest module DigitalAssets continue to use CBO (via a wrapper).

It's better (for performance) to use DAL2 or CBO or even DAL+?
Can someone help me :-)

In the core we use DAL+ everywhere. You can see that in the core DataProvider class, which used to be an abstract class in all pre DNN7 DNN versions. We lost the specific SQLDataProvider for the most part. Having said that: internally, we do use the PetaPoco methods to access the database. Again, just look at the SQLDataProvider class of the core.

The reason we are not using DAL 2 is that most modules are a little bit too complex for that. DAL2 is perfect if your module has a flat structure, and does not work with complex table joins etcetera.

With respect of performance, there is not much difference. Please read all blog posts that Charles Nurse did about this for more background information (series starts here:

Hi Erik,
Thanks for your clear answer. I do the same for my own modules, DAL2 for simple access to avoid basic SQL Stored Procedures and DAL+ for the rest.

Hi Erik,
Thanks for this information.
I do the same with my own modules: DAL2 for simple requests (avoid SQL StoredProcedures to manage) and DAL+ for more complex situation.
For the curious on DAL+:
