I'm pretty new to DAL2 but from I've read I came to conclusion that with DAL2 if you want to retrieve an entity along with its related entities you'd have to do it yourself either at the DB level (with a SP) or populate it manually in your C# code.

Is this correct? If so, this is not acceptable. Through relationship fix-up, EF is smart enough to give you all of the related entities when you select a target entity (e.g., select Book you'll also get Author and stuff). Is there any way to do this with DAL2?

No, You would have to code it yourself, or use EF

Mind you: DAL2 was never meant to be a replacement for EF
