Is it possible to have nested panes (smaller pane inside a bigger one)? If it's not possible, are there any workarounds or alternatives?

No, you use multiple modules (containers) in a pane for that.

Stack your containers like Timo suggested or simply stack your content in the same pane.

We can develop skin in which one or more smaller panes can be accommodated inside one large  pane.

For this, you will have to adjust the size of one or more smaller div inside one large div.
We can do this either by using css classes or inline styles.

Sorry, but that's not possible. When you somehow would manage to get this to work, you will be in trouble on future upgrades. DNN does not support nested panes.
